Eric Adams, as Mayor
The former Mayor of Brooklyn stood out from the crowd during his campaign in a post-pandemic context. Indeed, New York really took a beating following Covid-19. Businesses started to close and go bankrupt, the population gradually started leaving and security became more fragile. Elected mayor of the big city in 2021, the former police officer, who has risen through the ranks, has set his sights on restoring security to the city and improving the situation. He was the 110th Mayor and the city’s second african-american mayor. Unfortunately, also the first sitting mayor to be charged with a federal crime.
The accusations
He faces 5 charges. The main points of this process are: corruption, fraud during his campaign and an investigation linked to Turkey, electronic fraud and exchanges of files, alleged acceptance of luxury gifts and travels in exchange for political favors. He reportedly obtained approval in particular to speed up the construction of a Turkish consular building in New York. In novembre 2023, the FBI federal police reportedly seized the mayor’s mobile phones and electronic equipment and searched the home of one of his campaign fundraisers. He is said to have fraudulently obtained more than $10 million in public funds for his campaign.
Not a shock for the city
The lack of shock among new yorkers over the accusations against Eric Adams could be explained by the fact that political scandals are unfortunately common in the city. However its popularity has already been called into question by the expérience of the mayor’s administration. He suffered growing criticism of his handling of the migration crisis in New York. His perceived inability to effectively reduce crime was also an element. These factors have helped to erode voter confidence. There is also talk of a negative side for the democrats not long before the American elections between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The Mayor says he is innocent and has ruled out the idea of resigning.
