The Taliban regime: systemic oppression, particularly for women
Since their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban have reimposed a regime marked by an ultra-conservative interpretation of Sharia law. According to the UN, the country is experiencing ‘gender apartheid’. The Taliban took power after the withdrawal of American and allied forces, ending a twenty-year war. The Taliban, who had already ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, resumed oppressive practices, particularly with regard to women, while initially promising a ‘different’ regime. These promises quickly proved to be illusory.
