Myanmar, also known as Burma, is facing a severe humanitarian, political, and economic crisis that has intensified since the military coup in February 2021. The country has a long history of military rule and ethnic conflicts. Hopes for democracy briefly emerged after reforms in 2011, but were dashed when the military overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) just three months after their victory in the 2020 elections.
